JEJU WORKSHOP [Tourism and the city] is the title for a Spain Korea architectural workshop to be held in Jeju Island. The island is the biggest one in the Republic of Korea, and one of the most visited tourist sites well known for its natural beauties including a volcanic mountain and white sand beaches shoring the azure ocean. Collaborating with local architects, participants of this workshop will work to address these natural settings and produce architectural designs relevant to the island’s nature and its architectural legacy. The nature, the energy and the experimental urbanism will be some of the strategies to unravel the contemporary condition of the place. Also, this Spain Korea gathering is an occasion for creating a rapport among participants and exchanging their views on the current currency of the cultural tourism. Spending three days on the island, the workshop aims to be another powerful event that continues our past efforts to further advance cultural understanding between Spain and Korea.

The main goal of the workshop is to create a think-tank for the
contemporary situation of the Island. Trough the pedagogy that includes intensive
dialogue between students and guest professors, the workshop hopes to raise variant voices
first. The heterogeneous exchange
between ages, countries and different status will create a platform of
knowledge to create the first brainstorming of designs on the specific site
of the island.
This workshop
has been proposed by Soongsil University, and Jeju National
University. The
Support of the Spanish embassy will
be crucial to the success of the event and boost the morale of all the participants,
not to mention the public understanding of this exchange. The guest professors will be Korean architects both from
Jeju and Seoul, and foreign
architects from Spain, all of whom are renowned in their practices. Iñaki Ábalos and Renata Sentkiewicz Professor at Harvard GSD, Mi5 professor at AA school, Jungin Kim and Maria Jose Marcos. The participation of the Spanish guests will bring external examples
of the pedagogical practice and will encourage the diversity of views.
Together with the local
architects, this Spanish exchange can strengthen the relationship of two national cultures, in a
way that crosspollinates different, but complementary pedagogical cultures. The participating students are coming from
both Soongsil University
and Jeju National University.
Time
The workshop is scheduled for four intensive days in the spring season, between May 20th and 24th. The opening will be Tuesday 20th and the final critic Friday 24th.
